DID YOU KNOW…
…about our Chieftain Band? The Chieftain Band is under the direction of Jess Nelson. This is his 18th year at the helm of the band. In those 18 years the Chieftain Band has grown by leaps and bounds. They’ve grown so much that this year the marching band has changed to a band with students in grades 9-12 instead of grades 8-12. A 9-12 marching band, while unusual to H-L, is a very common practice. Additionally, the Chieftain Concert Band has qualified for State Competition in 2016 and 2018.
The Chieftain Band is proud to have a hard-working and dedicated group of students. In addition to marching band in the fall, nine of our students play football, 8 are cheerleaders, 9 run cross country, 5 play volleyball, 3 golf, 2 are in dance, 8 are in quiz bowl and 8 are involved in FFA. We are fortunate to have coaches and advisors who make it possible for our students to participate in multiple activities.
Our Marching Band puts in countless hours of practice. In June, the Drumline holds a drumline camp, 2 ½ hours a day for 5 days. In August, the band participates in Band Camp, 5 hours a day for 10 days. During school, we rehearse 45 minutes each school day and rehearse an extra hour after school every Wednesday.
In addition to varsity football half-time performances, you can catch The Chieftain Marching Band at the following performances: Hopewell-Loudon Teacher Orientation, Hopewell-Loudon Alumni Luncheon, Elmwood Showcase of Bands, Tiffin Developmental Center Halloween Parade, Fostoria Halloween Parade, Bascom Trick-or- Treat, Sounds of the Stadium Concert, Cedar Point, and Bascom Memorial Parade.
